Turn to God

Read Jeremiah 14:1 through 20:18

Published: Jul 26, 2017

As a people, Israel failed to place confidence in the living God. Whether Jeremiah spoke of gracious promises or threats, the people would not listen. Instead, they trusted in what they could see. The more they trusted in what was visible, the further they drew away from the invisible God. Their faith gave way to false confidences. Those who withdrew their trust in God experienced loss.

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:5).

God’s curse was two-fold: the people would lose that which was visible and dear to them, and they would lose their relationship with God. If Israel had pulled away from the world and turned toward the Lord, they would have experienced blessings. It is impossible to draw near to the world and at the same time remain near to God.

Challenge for Today: When you sense your heart focusing more on the things of this life, stop and turn toward the Lord.
